About Carl

"I believe strongly in the concept of a citizen legislator.  I believe that’s the way our democracy was intended to work.  The problem when one person is in office for too long is that they become career politicians, and they put their personal interests and the interests of their friends before the interests of the people.  I’m not a career politician. I’m part of this community, I’m a citizen first, and I’m running to represent the people." -- Carl Trujillo

Carl Trujillo was born in Santa Fe, NM, and is a lifelong member of our community. He and his wife, Ellen, live in Nambe, NM, in a home that Carl designed and built himself.

After graduating from Pojoaque Valley High School, Carl studied engineering at UNM. He now works at Los Alamos National Laboratory and has a particular interest in developing new materials for use in alternative energy. In 1990, Carl started his own business as a homebuilder, and has designed/built over 25 homes, most of them right here in our Carl and his wife and young soncommunity.

Carl is an active participant in a variety of local community-building organizations. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Santa Fe Humane Society, and is an award-winning public speaker and an active member of Toastmasters International. Carl has coached baseball at Pojoaque High School, Little League, youth basketball and soccer.

Carl is the proud father of four sons. His oldest, Aaron, studied political science at UNM. His second son, Eric, earned an athletic scholarship to Fort Lewis College, and his third son, Dominique, recently graduated from NMSU and is following in his father’s footsteps building a career in mechanical engineering. His fourth son, Thomas, isn’t quite old enough for college yet – he’s only three years old!

In 2010, Carl Trujillo made political history by coming within less than 75 votes of defeating Ben Lujan Sr. in the Democratic Primary.
